Covering a Sprinkle Cake – How Many Sprinkles Do I Need?

How Many Sprinkles Do I Need to Cover a Cake?

Sprinkles really do put the icing on the cake, adding that special finishing touch to your creations. You can quickly take your desserts from ordinary to extraordinary all in the blink of an eye by adding a dash of bright, fun colours and decorations.

The key is to make it look good enough to eat – while also making it look so pretty that you almost don’t want to touch it (well, almost! When it comes to desserts, we don’t have that kind of will power!)

In any case, if you’re wondering how to put sprinkles on a cake, and asking yourself ‘how many sprinkles do I need to decorate cupcakes?’, then you’ve come to the right place. Here at Be Bold Bakes, we just LOVE decorating cakes, cookies and cupcakes – it’s the best part of baking!

We’ve put together this guide to sprinkle cake decorating, with handy tips on how many sprinkles you need to cover a cake. It’s so much fun that you’ll just want to keep baking and decorating all day long, til your heart’s content!

How to Decorate a Cake with Sprinkles

To decide how many sprinkles you need to cover a cake, the key is to judge whether it looks too little or too much. This all depends on the size of the cake and the size of the sprinkles.

On an 8 inch cake, for example, you’ll need:

  • The top: 60g (1 pouch)
  • To the fault line or first image above:  120g (1 jar)
  • The base:  60g (1 pouch)
  • The whole cake: 150g (1 jar + 1 pouch)

For cupcakes you’ll want 1 pouch per 24, as a guide depending on how you use the sprinkle, very little to fully covered. 1 pouch will give you the happy medium.

If you add too many, sometimes the sprinkles won’t stick and they’ll fall off – but never fear. It’s an easy fix – simply brush a few off. Our Sprinkle Bento Boxes are a great way to get started, with all the different colours you need to create a rainbow!

There are no rules when it comes to cake decorating, and you can use as many or as few sprinkles for cake decorating as you want! You are only limited by your imagination.

How Do I Add Sprinkles to the Side of a Cake?

If you want to add sprinkles to the side of a cake, there are a few ways to do it. One way is to put the sprinkles in a small bowl (cupcakes) or onto a baking tray (cakes), then dip the side of the cake into the sprinkles.

You can also put the sprinkles in a ziplock bag, then snip off the corner of the bag and pipe the sprinkles onto the side of the cake. Whichever method you choose, make sure to use light, compact sprinkles like 2mm or  Jimmies, so that they stick to the side of the cake and don't fall off. Start with smaller mixes to cover the cake, then add the larger ones by hand to suit. It’s easier to spread small mixes than to add larger pieces directly onto the cake.

Making Cookies Instead? Here’s How to Get Sprinkles to Stick to Cookies

If you want to get sprinkles to stick to cookies, first make sure your cookies are dry/cooled and apply edible glue, not to much, you don't want it pooling just the slightest amount to stick to. Then, add your sprinkles.

You can mix the sprinkles in your fondant and roll out using cutters to make the shape of our cookie. 2mm, jimmies and crystals make unique style using this method.
